Nelle Harper Lee (April 28, 1926 – February 19, 2016), author of the classic of American literature, To Kill a Mockingbird, has ties to West Brattleboro. According to Casey Cep, author of the new book Furious Hours: Murder, Fraud, and the Last Trial of Harper Lee, Lee conducted some of her research and writing in West Brattleboro. In Cep’s research on Lee, she found letters by Lee postmarked from Vermont, and numerous references to Vermont in her notes and correspondence.
